The committee, which is traveling to 12 Alberta communities, is collecting input on the relationship between the province and the federal government and how Alberta's role in Confederation can be strengthened. About 30 people turned up for the session in Medicine Hat at the Lodge on Tuesday night. Larry Samcoe said Alberta must assert its jurisdiction in its areas of responsibility, including education, health care, the environment and resources. It should also look into issues like representation by population and Triple E senate. Jim Horsman, a former Medicine Hat MLA, said the federal government's unlimited taxing powers allows it to impede on areas of provincial responsibility, like health care. He said there also needs to be a balance of power in the senate. Al Hyland, the mayor or Bow Island, said the province should consult with municipalities to get their views before meeting with the federal government. It's the municipalities that have to supply many of the services that are mandated by other levels of government, he said. "Please think about the needs of municipalities have. Don't forget about us." Peter Parker took a different approach than most of the other speakers. He said Alberta's approach to Confederation is one of confrontation and conflict rather than co-operation. Alberta is too self-centred and needs to have respect for others, instead of the disregard often shown to other parts of the country. Committee chair Ian McClelland, MLA for Edmonton Rutherford, said the committee will be addressing the issue of western alienation. "Our desire is to address these root causes," said McClelland. He said the input from Albertans and the review will form the committee's report which will be delivered to International and Intergovernmental Relations Minister Halvar Jonson by Jun. 21 this summer. The Alberta government will then consider the committee's recommendations when negotiating for changes in the area of federal-provincial relations. The committee has been traveling around the province since Jan. 15.
